About the Christchurch Skyline | Miniature City Model
 
Named Ōtautahi by local Māori settlers, the city was founded beginning from a specific site along the Avon River / Ōtākaro, expanding as the Waitaha Iwi spread across the Marsh which used to stretch across what is the CBD and towards the East. European settlement would begin in the mid 1900s, with the first 792 residents to settle in Canterbury arriving in 1850, spreading from what is Spencerville today over to the Port Hills of Banks Peninsula. In the years following, the City has been home to many significant figures, became the birthplace of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and several ‘Satellite Towns’ have appeared across the Canterbury Plains and Banks Peninsula
 
The population centre of Te Waipounamu, the South Island of Aotearoa, New Zealand, Christchurch is now home to 390,000 people. Hundreds of thousands of Tourists visit the 'Garden City' every year via it's International Airport or by Cruise ships that stop in the key transport and trade hub of Lyttelton Harbour. In both 2010 and 2011, one Mw 7.1 and one 6.3 Earthquake struck Canterbury, causing widespread damage to the Central City and the surrounding suburbs. Despite the damage and derelict buildings left since, In the years following these areas have undergone significant redevelopment, providing new, modern facilities and amenities to both the general public and the city’s many visitors.

This model features 4 significant locations/activities people commonly associate with Christchurch: The Port Hills Gondola, Christchurch Cathedral, New Regent Street (complete with mini Trams!) and the Avon River with a Punter going down the river. Multiple printed elements help capture details unachievable with bricks, such as the Cathedral's iconic circular stained window, the windows of New Regent Street or the Chalice located outside the Cathedral.
